Project 2

Project task & overview

Project 2 will have you go on a journey to answer all the questions. You will be working with several materials i.e., timber, rope, steel and tensile fabric to understand the nature and characteristics of these materials and how it is to be used in your design. You are to design a structure for self-isolation and to express your personal experiences during this pandemic period. You will learn about the timber’s life cycle, joints, joinery and structural quality and how it works with your assigned supporting material. You are to have an imaginary north point to locate your tectonic structure, indicating the direction of sunlight. The next step is to amalgamate your design intention (choose from your Project 1) and structure into your Tectonic with anthropometry and ergonomics. In exploring anthropometry and ergonomics, imagine how you isolate in a 5m3 structure. Does the person sit, sleep, jump, or lean? Are they elliptical jumps like dancers or vertical jumps? Look into the anthropometry and ergonomic of the action and study the beauty in the movement of this commonality. Architectural Design I (ARC60208) March 2021 2 | P a g e The integration of all the above is tectonics. We will call this project, Tectonics: Materials, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Expression-Isolation Structure. You are to develop your Tectonic through a series of tutorials, tests and investigations involving scaled ‘study models’ using selected materials, exploring architectural elements and principles with anthropometry and ergonomics. The final design will be produced as a scaled model and series of drawings.

Design Intention

The design intention is to design an isolation structure by using the design element shapes and the design principle scale and proportion to highlight the banal action of lying down and express the depressed state of mind during the isolation period.

Reflection

I started off by simply searching on anything that is about 5m³ large to find some random references at first. So I wrote that down as a reference to my design. After that, I started to study the ergonomics and anthropometry by using myself as a measurement.

After I've studied about the measurement of human body, I decided that I'll use lying position as my banal action as lying might be comfortable compared to other banal action and this could well express the feeling of depressed.

For the tectonic structure, I've initially designed a bed-like structure, but from what my tutor has said, this might be over designed and might just look like an army bed.

After being criticize, I've explored a bit further into the design and came out with my final design.

I've also explored on the orthographic drawings and exploded axonometric drawings to express my design better.

Overall, I've learned further on the model making part from project 1 and received many criticisms.
